India – A Short Overview

India or Bharat is an independent, democratic country located in south Asia. India got its independence from British Rule in 1947. Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are among the neighboring countries of India.

India is a federation consisting of 28 states and 7 union territories. New Delhi is the capital city of India. India has a parliamentary form of government with a prime minister and his council of ministers at the center. India’s parliament consists of two houses – the Lower House and the Upper House known as Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The president is the head of the state and the supreme commander of the defense forces.

It is the seventh largest county by area and the second largest country by population in the world. The population of India in 2013 stands at 1.2 billion. India is a fast developing country though around 1/4th of its population is still living in utter poverty. Rising population and growing unemployment are two of the major problems being faced by the country today. Both agriculture and industrialization now occupy important positions in its growth. India is rich is natural resources and mineral wealth.

India is a multicultural country with people of diverse languages, religions, traditions, arts, literature and lifestyles. Hinduism is the main religion of India. Hindi is recognized as the national language of India. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, is well known all over the world for his weapons of non-violence and Satyagraha. India is popular the world over for its diverse cultures and principle of unity in diversity.
